Kolkata

Kolkata or formerly known as Calcutta, was founded by the British East India Company as its trading post and was under the British Rule for a period of 1773-1911. It is the capital of West Bengal and is the world's fourth largest city. It IS known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals such as the famous Dussera or Durga Pooja. It is also home to the Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, whose tomb is also on site.

Places of interest to be visited are: Dalhousie Square (Covering Raj Bhavan, High Court, GPO, Town Hall, Writer's Building and other important colonial buildings), Flower Market, Howrah Bridge, Kumhartoli (The Potter's Village), Jain Temple, Marble Palace, College Street Book Market, Indian Coffee House, St.Paul's Cathedral Church, Victoria Memorial and Mother Teresa's House.

Excursion to diamond Harbour, which is 51 kms away from Calcutta. Here, the river Hoogly turns towards the Bay of Bengal. It is a good picnic spot. Beyond is Bakkhali with a beautiful beach.
